BETHANY, W.Va. (Apr. 1) – The Saint Vincent College men's lacrosse team turned in a dominant all-around effort Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a 27-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference road victory over Bethany College at Bison Stadium.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 7-4 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0.
Saint Vincent seized control immediately and never let up, scoring the game's first seven goals in the opening quarter to build a 7-0 lead after 15 minutes.
Owen Rogers opened the scoring exactly three minutes into the contest off an assist from
Ryan Rosenberger, and the Bearcats continued to pour it on from there, getting two first-quarter goals from
Jonathan Nagy and two more from Rogers as part of the early surge.
Max Radcliffe and
Connor Smith also found the back of the net in the opening frame, as SVC dictated possession and tempo from the outset.
The Bearcats were even more explosive in the second quarter, adding 10 goals to take a 17-0 halftime lead. Smith started the period with a goal just eight seconds in, and Nagy followed with a man-up tally 28 seconds later.
Calvin Rose scored three times in the second quarter alone, while
Neal Ritchie,
Luca Blevins,
Logan Helman and Radcliffe all added goals during the run. Saint Vincent capped the half when Rose scored with seven seconds remaining, finishing a first-half performance in which the Bearcats outshot Bethany 55-1 and held the Bison without a shot on goal.
Saint Vincent kept its foot on the gas coming out of the break, scoring six more times in the third quarter. Smith, Rose, Rogers, Radcliffe, Helman and Blevins each scored in the stanza, pushing the margin to 23-0 entering the fourth. The Bearcats closed the afternoon with four more goals in the final quarter, getting scores from
Mason Krabbe,
Gavin Smallwood, Rose and Helman to account for the 27-0 final.
Rogers led a balanced Saint Vincent attack with eight points on three goals and five assists, while Nagy followed with seven points on five goals and two assists. Radcliffe totaled six points on three goals and three assists, and Rose also turned in a five-goal performance.
Helman added five points on three goals and two assists, while Smith finished with three goals.
Reed Hunt and Rosenberger each handed out three assists, Blevins posted two goals and an assist, and Krabbe and Smallwood each recorded a goal and an assist. In all, 10 different Bearcats scored and 14 players registered at least one point.
In faceoffs, Krabbe dominated play, winning 18 of 19 faceoffs while adding a game-high 21 ground balls, one goal and one assist.
Cole Vollero also went 11-for-12 on faceoffs and scooped up nine ground balls, helping Saint Vincent post a 29-for-31 showing in faceoffs as a team. The Bearcats finished with a commanding 52-9 edge in ground balls and also caused seven turnovers.
Defensively, Saint Vincent was just as sharp, holding Bethany to only five total shots and one shot on goal for the game. The Bearcats forced 30 Bethany turnovers while committing just 15 themselves, and they were perfect on clears, going 10-for-10.
Bethany converted just 6 of 17 clear attempts and went 0-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, while Saint Vincent cashed in on both of its man-up chances.
In goal,
Jackson Blow earned the win after playing the first 30 minutes, while
Tyler Friend worked the second half and made Saint Vincent's lone save of the afternoon as the Bearcats completed the shutout. Bethany goalkeeper Owen Livengood played all 60 minutes and made 15 saves.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 8, when it hosts Chatham University at 6 p.m.
