Men's lacrosse falls to Chatham at home

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 8) – The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team suffered a 15-7 Presidents' Athletic Conference loss to Chatham University Wednesday evening at UPMC Field.
 
Saint Vincent (7-5, 5-1 PAC) grabbed the early lead, as Calvin Rose opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game before Jonathan Nagy and Max Radcliffe each found the back of the net to put the Bearcats in front 3-2 late in the first quarter.
 
Chatham answered with a goal from Devin Traister to even the score at 3-3 after one, then scored the only three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-3 advantage into halftime.
 
The Cougars extended their lead in the third, scoring five times in the period. Nagy scored off an assist from Connor Smith with 6:52 left in the quarter, but Chatham answered with three more goals and carried an 11-4 lead into the fourth.
 
Chatham added four more goals in the final quarter to push the margin to 15-4 before the Bearcats closed the night with three of the game's final four goals.
 
 Reed Hunt scored on the man-up off an assist from Owen Rogers, Gavin Smallwood added an unassisted goal, and Luca Blevins converted on an extra-man chance off a feed from Ryan Rosenberger to account for the 15-7 final.
 
Nagy led Saint Vincent with two goals, while Rose finished with a goal and an assist. Rogers added two assists, and Hunt, Blevins, Smallwood and Radcliffe each scored once. Smith and Rosenberger each tallied an assist as well.
 
Defensively, Zander Vetter paced the Bearcats with 10 ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Garrett Ritts added five ground balls.
 
In faceoffs, Cole Vollero went 4-for-12, Mason Krabbe finished 5-for-9 and Rose was 1-for-4 as Saint Vincent went 10-for-25 overall. In goal, Ritts made 17 saves over 60 minutes.
 
As a team, Chatham held advantages in shots (53-34), shots on goal (32-19), ground balls (37-32) and faceoffs (15-10). The Bearcats converted both of their extra-man opportunities, while the Cougars finished 2-for-4 on extra-man chances.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 11 with a road PAC matchup against conference leading Grove City. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 noon at Grove City on Saturday afternoon.
