PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 28) — The Saint Vincent College men's volleyball team saw its winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to Chatham University in four sets, 3-1, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
With the loss, the Bearcats moved to 14-3 overall and 10-1 in PAC play, while Chatham improved to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
After taking the opening set, Saint Vincent dropped the next three as Chatham claimed the match by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, and 26-24.
Saint Vincent opened the day with a strong first set, hitting .313 behind 14 kills to earn a 25-21 victory. Chatham answered in the second, however, using 17 kills and a .361 hitting percentage to even the match with a 25-23 win.
The Cougars carried that momentum into the third, posting 20 kills in a 25-23 decision, before edging the Bearcats 26-24 in a tightly contested fourth set to close out the match.
Owen Ward led the Bearcats offensively with 17 kills, while
Shawn McSwiggen added 11 kills and two service aces.
Braeden Artman turned in an efficient performance in the middle, finishing with 10 kills on a .714 hitting percentage and a team-high nine total blocks.
Jack Ryan directed the offense with 44 assists and also contributed four blocks, while
Jackson Genicola paced the back row with 17 digs.
As a team, Saint Vincent totaled 50 kills, 47 assists, 49 digs, and 10 blocks. Chatham finished with 62 kills on a .255 hitting percentage, compared to .209 for the Bearcats. The Cougars were led by Tim McCabe's 26 kills, while Derek Paul added 16 and Benjamin Shelestak recorded 14.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 1, when the Bearcats host Thiel College in another PAC matchup. The PAC regular season finale is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the winner earning the PAC Regular Season Championship and the number one seed in the PAC playoffs.
