BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (March 28) — The Saint Vincent College women's lacrosse team put together a dominant performance on both ends of the field Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 19-4 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Geneva College at Wright Fields.
Saint Vincent improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in PAC play with the win, while Geneva fell to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
The Bearcats seized control almost immediately, scoring the game's first nine goals and taking a 9-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter.
Valeria Hurtado opened the scoring off an assist from
Melanie Seefeldt at the 14:17 mark, and Saint Vincent never looked back.
Chloe Herring scored three times in the first period, while Hurtado added two goals and Seefeldt scored twice, including a pair of woman-up goals, as the Bearcats overwhelmed Geneva early.
Geneva got on the board twice in the second quarter, but Saint Vincent answered with three more goals to take a 12-2 lead into halftime.
Cayla Connolly scored twice in the frame, including a woman-up tally, while Hurtado added her third goal of the day.
The Bearcats continued to control play after the break.
Carolina Walters scored early in the third quarter off another assist from Seefeldt, and Herring followed with a free-position goal and a man-down score later in the period to push the advantage to 15-2 entering the fourth.
Saint Vincent then closed the day with four more goals in the final quarter, getting scores from Walters, Seefeldt,
Katie Smith and
Penda Mbengue.
Seefeldt turned in a huge all-around offensive effort, totaling three goals and six assists for a game-high nine points. Herring added five goals and one assist for six points, while Hurtado finished with three goals and one assist.
Walters posted two goals and two assists,
MaryKatherine New recorded one goal and two assists, and Connolly added a pair of goals. Smith chipped in a goal and an assist, while Dupilka and Mbengue also scored in the win.
Herring also led the Bearcats defensively with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, while
Ava Baeslach controlled the draw with a game-high eight draw controls and added five ground balls.
Dupilka added five draw controls, and New and Smith each collected three ground balls.
Cassidy Rega played all 60 minutes in goal and made two saves while allowing four goals.
As a team, Saint Vincent held decisive advantages in shots (31-7), shots on goal (26-5), draw controls (18-6), and clearing percentage, converting 8 of 11 clear attempts. The Bearcats also went 1-for-1 on free-position shots and forced 31 Geneva turnovers, with 14 caused turnovers as a team.
Taylor Robinson led Geneva with two goals, while Hannah Skwarek had a goal and an assist and Madi DeRuiter added one goal. Lexi Lee made eight saves in net for the Golden Tornadoes.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 with a home PAC matchup against Allegheny. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at UPMC Field.
