Baseball drops doubleheader against Westminster

LATROBE, Pa. (Mar. 29)- The Saint Vincent baseball team dropped a Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westminster at home on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats fell in the opener of the doubleheader by a score of 12-2, before dropping the finale by a score of 6-0.
 
Game 1- Westminster 12, Saint Vincent 2
The Saint Vincent College baseball team dropped the opening game of its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westminster College, 12-2, Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Ballpark.
 
Westminster improved to 14-4 and 5-0 in PAC play while Saint Vincent fell to 6-13 and 2-3 in PAC play.
 
Saint Vincent struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Isiah Petty reached and eventually scored when Brooklyn Hicks singled to left field, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Westminster answered in the fourth on a solo home run by Aaron Jones to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Titans took control in the fifth, scoring three times to move in front 4-1. Nate Demchak delivered an RBI single, Jones brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and another run scored on an error.
 
Westminster added a Demchak RBI single in the sixth and a Braden Zeigler RBI single in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1.
 
Westminster then broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning. Jones doubled in a run, Jack Strausser added an RBI single, Zeigler and Parker Lyons each recorded RBI singles, and Thomas Rook drove in another run with a single to center.
 
Saint Vincent answered with its second run in the bottom half of the inning, when A.J. McLafferty lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Ryan Finniff and made it 11-2. Strausser added an RBI single in the ninth for the game's final run.
 
Finniff and Nolan Hurd each had two hits to lead the Bearcats, while Petty and Hicks added one hit apiece. Hicks and McLafferty were credited with Saint Vincent's two RBI, Petty and Finniff scored the two runs, and the Bearcats finished with six hits and two walks.
 
Jason Forgey took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, over 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.
 
 Jack Reichart worked 1.0 inning, Gavin Roebuck tossed 0.2 scoreless innings, Evan Wiewiora allowed five runs in 0.2 innings, and Nolan Miller threw the final 1.1 innings.
 
Westminster totaled 16 hits, led by Jones, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Zeigler and Demchak also had three hits apiece, while Strausser added two hits and two RBI.
 
As a team, Saint Vincent committed three errors, while Westminster played error-free defense.
 
Game 2- Westminster 6, Saint Vincent 0
The Saint Vincent College baseball team fell to Westminster College, 6-0, in the second game of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Ballpark.
 
Westminster improved to 15-4 and 6-0 in PAC play, while the Bearcats dropped to 6-14 and 2-4 in PAC play.
 
Westminster did all of its scoring in two innings, plating five runs in the top of the first before adding one more in the seventh.
 
In the opening frame, Braden Zeigler delivered an RBI single, Thomas Rook added an RBI single, and Nate Demchak followed with a two-run double as the Titans jumped out to the early 5-0 advantage. Ian Temple later drove in the game's final run with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
 
Saint Vincent was limited to just one hit in the contest, a single by Lane Golkosky. The Bearcats were retired without a walk and struck out seven times against Westminster starter Josh Reed, who tossed a complete-game shutout.
 
Braden Trainor took the loss for Saint Vincent after working the first 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks. Gavin Switzer pitched the seventh and allowed one run, while Garrett Knapp closed out the final two innings without allowing a run.
 
Westminster finished with 12 hits, getting two apiece from Aaron Jones, Ian Temple, Nate Demchak, and Conner Adams. The Titans also stole five bases in the win. Saint Vincent committed one error.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 with a home PAC doubleheader against Franciscan. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield.
