LATROBE, Pa. (March 7) – The Saint Vincent College men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 non-conference matchup to Hood College on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Field.
With the result, the Bearcats moved to 3-3 overall.
Hood scored two goals in the opening three minutes and later pushed its lead to 4-2 going into the second quarter.
Reed Hunt got the Bearcats on the board with a man-up goal at the 10:02 mark off an assist from
Liam McCall, and
Ryan Rosenberger added another with 4:33 remaining to make it a 4-2 game after one.
Saint Vincent continued to chip away in the second quarter.
Jonathan Nagy scored an extra-man goal just 13 seconds into the period off another helper from McCall, and
Calvin Rose netted the equalizer at 4:40 on a feed from
Owen Rogers to tie the game at 4-4.
Hood, however, answered with a late goal from Alex Odenheimer with 58 seconds left in the half to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
The Blazers seized momentum in the third, holding Saint Vincent scoreless while stringing together three unanswered goals. Nino Rizzolino opened the quarter's scoring at 11:36, before Eric Reese and Isiac Nafziger both found the back of the net in the final two minutes to extend Hood's advantage to 8-4 heading to the fourth.
The Bearcats made a strong push in the final quarter, scoring six times over the last 15 minutes.
Hunt started the surge at 14:08 off an assist from Nagy, and Nagy later scored twice in a span of just over two minutes to help Saint Vincent close within 10-8. After
Liam McCall scored at 7:56 and
Max Radcliffe added another at 5:14, the Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 10-9.
Cam Herring then made it a one-goal game again at 11-10 with 3:43 to play, but Hood closed the contest with goals at 1:42 and 0:11 to seal the 13-10 win.
Nagy led the Bearcats with a hat trick, while Hunt added two goals. McCall paced the offense with one goal and five assists, giving him a game-high six points, and both Rosenberger and Radcliffe finished with a goal and an assist. Rose and Herring also scored for Saint Vincent.
As a team, Saint Vincent outshot Hood 42-27 and held a 32-31 edge in ground balls, while also converting 2-of-4 extra-man opportunities.
Zander Vetter led the Bearcats with seven ground balls,
Mason Krabbe added seven of his own and went 8-for-24 at the faceoff spot, and
Jackson Blow made two saves in goal.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, March 14 with a road matchup at Susquehanna University. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
