Seefeldt scores game-winner in Bearcats 6-5 win at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (March 7) – The Saint Vincent College women's lacrosse team earned a dramatic 6-5 non-conference road victory over Wilson College on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 3-1 overall on the season.
 
Wilson scored the game's first goal at the 10:30 mark of the opening quarter, but Saint Vincent answered with back-to-back scores to take the lead. MaryKatherine New tied the game at 1-1 on a free-position goal with 6:36 left in the first, and Cara Dupilka followed with an unassisted goal at the 3:58 mark to give the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage after one.
 
The Bearcats added the only goal of the second quarter when Melanie Seefeldt scored on an extra-man opportunity off an assist from Katie Smith with 9:05 remaining in the half, sending Saint Vincent into the break with a 3-1 lead.
 
Wilson opened the third-quarter scoring on a goal by Alyvia Henneman, but Dupilka answered just 44 seconds later with her second goal of the day to push the Bearcat lead back to two at 4-2 heading into the fourth.
 
Wilson mounted its rally in the final quarter, scoring three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead. Finley Vandevander scored with 9:29 to play, Sadie Fike tied the game at 4-4 with 7:04 remaining, and Fike struck again on an extra-man chance at the 4:13 mark to put the Phoenix in front.
 
Saint Vincent responded in the closing minutes, as Katie Smith netted the equalizer with 2:26 to go before Seefeldt delivered the game-winner just 17 seconds later off an assist from New, giving the Bearcats the final 6-5 margin.
 
Dupilka and Seefeldt each scored two goals to lead the Saint Vincent attack, while New added a goal and an assist for a two-point afternoon.
 
Smith also finished with a goal and an assist, and she turned in a strong all-around performance with a team-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers. New paced the Bearcats with four draw controls, while Dupilka added three draw controls of her own.
 
Defensively, Cassidy Rega was outstanding in goal, playing all 60 minutes and making 11 saves while allowing just five goals. Saint Vincent finished with 12 ground balls, six caused turnovers, and a 9-4 edge in draw controls.
 
 The Bearcats were 12-for-18 on clears and converted 3-of-10 free-position chances, including New's first-quarter goal.
 
As a team, Saint Vincent totaled 19 shots and 13 shots on goal, while Wilson finished with 26 shots and 16 shots on goal. Fike led Wilson with three goals, but the Bearcats were able to come up with the final answer in the closing moments to secure the road win.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, March 14 with a road matchup at Mount Aloysius. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 noon on Saturday.
