Baseball falls in doubleheader at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Apr. 14)- The Saint Vincent baseball team was swept in a Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader at Washington and Jefferson on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats lost the opener by a score of 6-2, before falling in the finale of the doubleheader by a score of
 
Game 1- W&J 6, Saint Vincent 2
The Saint Vincent College baseball team dropped a 6-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference decision to Washington & Jefferson College Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
 
With the loss, the Bearcats moved to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in PAC play, while the Presidents improved to 20-5 overall and 11-2 in conference action.
 
Saint Vincent struck first in the top of the third. Ryan Finniff singled, Dylan Schmude was hit by a pitch and Ryan Tierney followed with an RBI single through the left side to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
 
Washington & Jefferson answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Josh Dezenzo after a Saint Vincent error helped put the tying run in position.
 
The Bearcats regained the lead in the fourth, as Isiah Petty singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Traynor Janosko to make it 2-1. The Presidents responded again in the bottom of the inning, evening the score at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Stocker.
 
The game turned in the sixth, when Washington & Jefferson plated four runs on just one hit. Andrew Miko scored on a bases-loaded walk to Stocker, Ben Schuler followed with another RBI walk, Keegan Carr drew a bases-loaded walk of his own, and Dezenzo added a sacrifice fly to center to push the Presidents in front, 6-2.
 
Saint Vincent finished with eight hits in the loss, getting two-hit efforts from Schmude, Tierney and Petty. Janosko drove in the Bearcats' other run, while Finniff scored once. The Presidents managed six hits, but drew seven walks and took advantage of a hit batter and an error.
 
On the mound, Andrew Bell kept Saint Vincent in the game, allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits over 4.2 innings with three walks and one strikeout. Jacob Auld was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in one-third of an inning, while Jason Forgey and Connor Soska also worked in relief. Soska tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out one.
 
For Washington & Jefferson, Chase Perry allowed two runs over 5.0 innings before Jake Stiehl earned the win with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
 
Game 2- W&J 25, SVC 6 (7 Innings)
The Saint Vincent College baseball team dropped game two of its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday afternoon, falling 25-6 in seven innings.
 
With the loss, the Bearcats moved to 9-19 overall, while the Presidents improved to 21-6.
 
Washington & Jefferson took control early, scoring five runs in the first inning and eight more in the second to build a 13-0 lead. The Presidents added two runs in the fourth, nine in the fifth and one in the sixth.
 
Saint Vincent got on the board in the third when Ryan Kirk singled to center to score Ben Hudson, then pushed across five runs in the sixth. Brooklyn Hicks and Hudson were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded, Kirk added a sacrifice fly, and Nolan Hurd reached on a fielder's choice that brought home one run while two more scored on a throwing error.
 
The Bearcats finished with six runs on 11 hits. Hurd went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hudson scored twice and drove in a run. Kirk added two RBIs, and Ryan Tierney, Austen Hester, T.J. Bucy, Garrett Brady, Lane Golkosky, Reid Rachwal and Brayden Macaluso all recorded hits.
 
Matthew Greenwood took the loss for Saint Vincent, while Nolan Hurd also stole a base for the Bearcats. Washington & Jefferson totaled 25 runs on 22 hits, with Josh Dezenzo going 3-for-3 with a home run, triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 18 with a home PAC doubleheader against Thiel. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with senior day festivities taking place prior to the game at Bearcat Ballfield.
