Edwards cards top ten finish at Westminster Invitational to open season

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (Aug. 31)- The Saint Vincent men's golf team opened their 2026-27 season with a T-7th result in the 14-team field at the Westminster College Invitational at Avalon Field Club on Monday.

As a team, the Bearcats compiled a total score of 328, finishing just behind PAC foes Westminster (327) and Grove City (326). Pitt-Bradford won the event with a total team score of 306, while Geneva and Mount Aloysius both shot a 323 to tie for second and Pitt-Greensburg shot a 325 to finish fourth.

Senior Matt Edwards picked up right where he left off last season, finishing as the top finisher at the event for SVC. Edwards finished T-10th in the 80-golfer field with a round of 78 (+6). The senior carded two birdies along with 12 pars. Edwards shot a 40 on the front nine, before carding a 38 on the back.

Fellow senior Owen Dzurko shot a round of 80 for SVC, finishing two strokes behind Edwards to finish T-17th. Dzurko recorded one birdie and nine pars, shooting a 40 on each nine.

Evan Bower and David Newsom finished in the middle of the pack, both shooting an 85 during the season opener. Bower totaled eight pars, shooting a 41 on the front nine and 44 on the back, while Newsom totaled seven pars, shooting a 42 and 43.

Freshman Trevor Donsen recorded a round of 87 in his first collegiate tournament. Donsen carded one birdie and six pars, shooting a 46 on the front, before following that up with a 41 on the back nine.

Chase Hartnett of Pitt-Bradford took home the individual medalist honors, shooting a round of 72 (E), recording a tournament-high six birdies throughout his round.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, September 5, competing in the opening round of the College of Wooster Gatorade Collegiate Classic at Zoar Village Golf Course in Dover, Ohio. Tee times will begin at 11 a.m. for the opening round on Sunday with the final round taking place on Sunday, September 6 at 11 a.m.
