CHIPPEWA, Pa. (Sept. 22) – Daniel Maddock scored four goals as the Saint Vincent men's soccer team rolled to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Penn State Beaver on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Chippewa.
The Bearcats (5-2) scored seven times in the opening half, including four goals from Maddock in a span of less than six minutes, to take control early against the Lions. Seven different Bearcats found the back of the net in the victory. Along with Maddock's four-goal performance, Seamus Ballesteros, Jake Morrissey, Coleman Stockdale, Josh Tomas and Iverson Agyei each scored for Saint Vincent.
Ballesteros opened the scoring in the seventh minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Javier Tinoco to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Maddock then took over, beginning with a penalty-kick goal in the 11th minute to double the SVC advantage. Just 87 seconds later, Maddock scored his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Ballesteros to make it 3-0.
Maddock completed the hat trick just 44 seconds later, scoring in the 13th minute to extend the Saint Vincent lead to 4-0. He capped off his four-goal performance in the 17th minute, giving the Bearcats a 5-0 advantage. Saint Vincent continued to add to its lead later in the half. Morrissey scored off an assist from Nick Johnson in the 28th minute, before Stockdale scored off a Bernie Rutkowski assist in the 42nd minute to send the Bearcats into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats added two more goals in the second half. Tomas scored in the 60th minute off Johnson's second assist of the afternoon to increase the SVC advantage to 8-0. Agyei capped off the scoring in the 75th minute, converting a penalty kick to give Saint Vincent the 9-0 victory. Saint Vincent dominated the offensive numbers, outshooting Penn State Beaver by a 36-3 margin, including a 26-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bearcats also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Maddock recorded four goals on six shots, with five of his attempts on goal. Johnson totaled two assists, while Ballesteros finished with one goal and one assist. Tinoco and Rutkowski also recorded assists in the victory. Andrew Schneider earned the shutout in goal for Saint Vincent, making two saves over the full 90 minutes.
The Bearcats will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 26 as they host Washington and Jefferson at UPMC Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Latrobe.
