SVC suffers PAC defeat to Westminster

BOX SCORE

Westminster College defeated the Bearcat men's soccer team 2-0 in PAC action on the Saint Vincent Turf.

The Titans kept constant pressure on the Bearcat defense throughout the game, out-shooting SVC 20-10, while also owning a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

After posting the first two shots of the game, the Bearcats saw the Titans come to life, as the visitors tallied nine shots and three corners in the 10-minute span, with David Osae scoring the game's first goal on a blast from 15 yards out 18:35 into play.

Westminster didn't wait long to add to its lead, with Aaron Zavora putting the Titans up 2-0 off an assist from Pete Cline with 10:29 left in the opening half.  The Titans continued to maintain possession for the duration of the half, ending the frame with a 16-4 advantage in shots.  SVC goalie Jacob Gilbertson made six saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the deficit at two goals.

In the second half, the majority of the play was in the middle of the field, with neither team posting a shot until Gilbertson stopped a Westminster blast in the 63rd minute.  Following an offsides call against the Titans in the 68th minute, the Bearcats looked as if they were ready to cut into the lead, with Trevor Cutlip sending a blast toward a seemingly empty net.  However, a Westminster defender leaped at the last second on the goal line to knock the ball to safety.

It was the last real offensive threat of the game for either team, as Westminster held the SVC offense at bay over the final 20 minutes of the game to leave Latrobe with the two-goal win.

Gilbertson ended the game with seven saves for SVC in the losing effort, while Titan keeper Mike Codita was forced to make just two saves to earn the shutout win.

The defeat drops the Bearcats' record to 3-11-2 overall, and 1-4 in the PAC, while Westminster improves to 3-8-2 and 2-2.

Saint Vincent will return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to PAC foe Washington & Jefferson to play under the lights at 7pm.
