The Lady Bearcats picked up their first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory in fine fashion, shutting out Chatham University 5-0 on the Saint Vincent Turf.
Saint Vincent controlled play for the duration of the game, out-shooting the Cougars 48-2 and taking 13 corner kicks to Chatham's two. While the Lady Bearcat offense clicked from the start, the team's defense limited the Cougars to just one shot on goal for the game.
The Lady Bearcats got things rolling in a hurry, with
Monika Derboghossian scoring her first collegiate goal off of a one-timer pass from classmate Jen Kisner just 3:43 into play.
Fifteen minutes later,
Sam Shumaker scored SVC's second goal of the game, sending a floater in from 60 yards out that lofted over the Chatham keeper and into the goal to put the Lady Bearcats ahead 2-0. The score would stay that way into the intermission.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Lady Bearcats added onto their lead, with Allison Rostad scoring from 15 yards out off an assist from Shumaker.
The hosts would then close out the scoring with two goals in a two-minute span late in the half. With 12:30 left, a scramble in front of the net resulted in a
Carly Duffy goal, and then with 11:25 remaining,
Tenesha Corrales dribbled in on a breakaway and sent the ball untouched to the far post and into the net to end the day's scoring.
The five goals scored by the Lady Bearcats marked the team's highest goal output of the season, and it was the most SVC has scored in a game in almost exactly a year, dating back to a 6-0 victory over Thiel on Oct. 9th of last season.
The Lady Bearcats put pressure on Chatham for the entire 90 minutes, as SVC outshot Chatham 23-2 in the first half and 25-0 in the second half.
Kirstie Mills earned the victory in goal, as she started and played 79 minutes, making one save, before giving way to
Cassie Overly, who shared the shutout after playing the final 11 minutes in net.
For Chatham, goalie Lauren Strang was tested early and often, and finished with 19 saves.
The victory improves SVC's record to 2-6-3 overall, and evens the team's PAC mark to 1-1. The Lady Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Greenville, PA to take on Thiel College. The game will be played at 5pm at Mercer High School.
