A late second half goal allowed the Bearcats to earn a 1-1, double-overtime tie at Allegheny College.
The host Gators scored just 15 minutes into the first half, but the Bearcat defense kept the deficit at one before SVC sophomore
Gage Arnold connected for a goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by
Alex Lardin, to send the game into overtime.
Allegheny looked to take control early, taking a 13-2 advantage in shots into the intermission. SVC's defense kept up its strong play as of late, limiting the Gators to just the one goal - scored by Travis Tasker - while goalie
Jake Gilbertson made three first half saves.
The game evened out in the second half, and while Allegheny had the advantage in possession time, the Bearcats forced a number of errant Gator shots. After Allegheny was called offsides, the Bearcats advanced the ball upfield, with Lardin hitting Arnold in the middle of the box. The sophomore then sent a left-footed blast into the back of the net with 7:03 left in regulation.
In overtime, the Bearcats managed to hold an advantage in possession time, and out-shot the Gators 5-3, but were unable to score a game-winner, leaving Meadville with the hard-fought tie.
Allegheny owned a 19-8 advantage in shots for the game, but the shots-on-goal were nearly identical, with the Gators holding a scant 7-5 advantage, with Gilbertson making five saves.
"Our kids played hard," said Saint Vincent head coach
Keith Harmon. "I'm proud of them. We seemed to outplay them more and more as the game went on, and if there was some more time on the clock, who knows what could have happened."
The Bearcats (0-5-2) will search their elusive first win of the season on Friday, when they host LaRoche College at 3pm on the Saint Vincent Turf.
