Saint Vincent junior
Dean Jordan's first career goal couldn't have come at a better time, as he scored in the 81st minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 win over LaRoche College on the Saint Vincent Turf. Jordan scored on a header directly off of a
Clemente Mejia corner kick in the game's 81st minute to lift SVC to its long awaited first win of the season.
Bearcat goalie
Jacob Gilbertson picked up the shutout in goal – his second of the season- by making six saves to earn the win.
The game was evenly played throughout, as Saint Vincent held a slim 16-15 margin in shots, and took four corner kicks compared to two from the Redhawks.
Early on, LaRoche's offense looked to press, as the Redhawks took five of the game's first seven shots, with Gilbertson making three saves in the first 30 minutes of action. In the closing minutes of the opening stanza, however, momentum began to shift the way of the Bearcats, as they posted three shots on goal over the final four minutes of action, but were unable to solve LaRoche goalie Doug Perino.
Saint Vincent continued to put pressure on the LaRoche defense in the minutes leading up to Jordan's goal, as Perino denied SVC's
Ben Skvarca twice at close range in the 59th minute. Twenty minutes later,
Alex Lardin and
Kyle Thompson were both stopped on the doorstep, with the latter shot going over the crossbar and out of bounds, setting up the corner kick that led to Jordan's game-winner.
LaRoche looked for one final push, with Gilbertson making a sprawling save with seven minutes left. It turned out to be the last threat from the Redhawks on the afternoon, as the Bearcats held on for the home win.
Perino made eight saves for LaRoche in the losing effort, which saw the bulk of its offense come from the duo of Mitchell Diven and Adam Mandella, who each accounted for three shots on goal. The Bearcats (1-5-2) will return to action on Wednesday, as they will be back home to face crosstown rival Pitt-Greensburg at 3pm on the Saint Vincent Turf.
