Bearcats cruise to win over Waynesburg

BOX SCORE

The Bearcats used a second-half surge to pick up a 73-47 win over visiting Waynesburg University in Presidents' Athletic Conference basketball action.

Saint Vincent shook off a sluggish first half to shoot 62 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, outscoring the 'Jackets 45-22 in the second half to stretch their winning streak to four games.

BJ McGill led three double-digit scorers for the Bearcats with 17 points, while teammate Dennis Bassich added 16 and Armani Fountain 12.

The victory moved the Bearcats' overall record to 10-5, while pushing their PAC mark to 3-2.  Waynesburg falls to 5-10 overall, and 2-4 in the PAC.

Leading 6-5 five minutes into a defensive-themed first half, the Bearcats embarked on a long 15-4 run, capped off with a long Bassich three-pointer to push SVC in front 21-9 with 8:04 left in the frame.

Waynesburg would surge back over the next five minutes, using a trio of three-pointers to spur a 14-2 run to tie the game 23-23 with 3:42 left.  A free-throw from McGill second later would give SVC a one-point lead, but Waynesburg would answer back to grab its first lead of the night, 25-24, with 2:47 to go.  Bassich would score four points over the final two minutes to give SVC a slim 28-25 lead heading into the intermission.

Over the first half, the teams combined for 22 fouls and 20 turnovers, while the Bearcats shot just 36 percent from the field (9-for-25) and the 'Jackets 25 percent (9-for-36).  The teams also combined to shoot just 3-for-20 from long range, including a 1-for-11 showing from Saint Vincent.

The teams shared the first four baskets of the second half, before the Bearcats went on a tear, scoring 10 unanswered points in a three-minute span, capped by a Grant Latus bucket at the 13:40 mark that would put SVC in front 42-29.

Waynesburg's Lou Galante would hit triples on the 'Jackets next three trips down the court to cut the SVC lead down to six, 46-40, with 10:35 remaining in regulation, but it was as close as the visitors would get, as Saint Vincent responded once again.

The Bearcats regained a double-digit lead with 7:32 left when a conventional three-point play from Tauvon Pettiford made the score 53-42, and three minutes later, following five straight points from Fountain, the Bearcats found themselves ahead 64-44.

Saint Vincent would score the game's final eight points, ending the night on a 22-5 run over the last six minutes, to cruise down the stretch for the conference win.

Waynesburg was led on the night by Galante's 14 points, as he came off the bench to go 4-for-5 from long range.  Jeff Young scored eight points for the 'Jackets, while teammate James Allenby grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to PAC foe Grove City for a 3pm tip.  A live audio webcast of the game will be available HERE.
