WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) - Juniors
Gage Arnold and
Anthony Balistreri each tallied two goals as the Saint Vincent men's soccer team used a four-goal outburst to defeat Waynesburg, 4-2, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The Bearcats struck first when Arnold converted a penalty kick just 6:12 into the game. The Yellow Jackets' Ray Melone tied the game, 1-1, 14:40 into the match on an assist from teammate Erick Burke. Just 67 seconds later, Arnold gave SVC the lead again, 2-1, on an assist from Balistreri, his second of the night. Waynesburg tied the game at the 21:16-mark on a goal by Jude Anuwe and the two teams went into halftime tied, 2-2.
The two teams played back-and-forth at the beginning of the second half before Balistreri posted his first goal of the game 62:50 in to the match on an assist from classmate
Clemente Mejia. With SVC up, 3-2, and time winding down, Balistreri added his second goal of the night and team-leading seventh of the season, with 2:24 remaining on a breakaway set up by freshman
Daniel Moore.
For the night, Waynesburg held a slight 15-14 edge on shots and attempted more corner kicks, 4-2. Balistreri led the team with six shots while freshman
Brody Ruffner added four shots and Arnold tallied three shots.
Senior goalkeeper
Jake Gilbertson earned the win in goal, allowing two goals and making four saves on the evening.
With the win, SVC improves to 3-9-1 on the season and evens its conference record to 2-2. Waynesburg falls to 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, traveling to Bethany, W.Va., for a 3 p.m. match with the Bison.
