The Saint Vincent College Bearcats defeated the Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions by a score of 92-51 in a non-conference matchup at the Carey Center.
Through the first few minutes, neither team had an easy time putting points on the board.
After a 10-0 run by the Bearcats, that started with a
Tauvon Pettiford layup and ended with a deep three pointer by sophomore
Isaac Turner, the score was 10-4 Saint Vincent.
After the Bearcats' run, both teams would trade baskets through the next several minutes. With a little under 11 minutes left to play in the first half, the score was 17-10 in favor of Saint Vincent.
Despite the constant scoring on both sides, turnovers were frequent with Penn State Fayette having 15 and Saint Vincent 10 in the first half.
With Saint Vincent leading 25-20 with a little over 5 minutes to play, the Bearcats had reached their seventh foul, which put the Lions on the line. Will Gaines, of Fayette, hit a free throw to trim Saint Vincent's lead to four, 27-23. Fayette would then go on a 5-3 run with just over 2 minutes left.
Howver, after a Saint Vincent timeout, the Bearcats would finish the half with a 10-1 run, making the score 40-29.
Fayette found themselves in early second half foul trouble, which created holes for the Bearcats. There were just over 11 minutes left to play when Saint Vincent ended an 11-2 run, putting them up 64-38. By the time Joshua Tomson of Fayette dropped five points on consecutive possessions, Saint Vincent had already established a 30 point lead, with seven minutes left to play.
As the lead grew, defense became easier for the Bearcats. Freshman
Ralph Nin blocked two key shots. Along with Nin, the rest of the defense only allowed the Roaring Lions to score four points in the final seven minutes of play.
Impact players for the Bearcats were Senior Guard
Dennis Bassich who led all scorers with 26 points, to go along with his three steals.
Isaac Turner and Pettiford had 19 and 17 points, respectively. Penn State Fayette's leading scorer was David Winns with 15 points to go with his 7 rebounds.
Dillon Stith added 10 rebounds for SVC, while Pettiford had a game-best five steals. The Bearcat defense created 33 Fayette turnovers for the game.
The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday night, traveling to Pittsburgh to take on La Roche College at 7PM.
