The Saint Vincent men's basketball team suffered a 58-54 loss to Grove City at the Carey Center after giving up a first half lead.
The Bearcats fall to 1-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play and 5-2 overall. The Wolverines improves to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
After going down by two at the beginning of the game, sophomore guard
Isaac Turner scored eight unanswered points for Saint Vincent. The Bearcats never relinquished their lead in the first half. However, Grove City kept the game close. Saint Vincent never led by more than eight points. The Bearcats went to the locker room up, 31-23.
The Wolverines roared out of the break scoring the first four points of the second half. At the 17:20 mark, they only trailed, 33-30. SVC scored only four points in the first nine minutes of play. Grove City capitalized with a Kris Verderber basket to cut the deficit to one, 33-32. After a Wolverine free throw tied the game, 33-33, Saint Vincent took a two-point lead with a
Tauvon Pettiford layup. But, Grove City's Mitch Marmelstein scored a three-pointer with 11:50 remaining in the game to give the Wolverines the lead that they would carry until the 2:03 mark when Turner completed a three-point play to tie the score, 51-51. Grove City's perfect free throw shooting in the last thirty seconds gave them the edge in the game.
The Bearcats were 19-58 (32.8 percent) from the field for the game, while the Wolverines were slightly better at 20-59 (33.9 percent).
Leading scorers for Saint Vincent were Turner (18 points),
Dennis Bassich (eight points), and
Nic Martin (eight points).
Dillon Stith,
Armani Fountain and Turner had six rebounds each.
Verderber led Grove City scoring with 11 points, followed by Marmelstein (10 points) and J.T. Schwartz (10 points).
Saint Vincent will look to rebound on the road against Thiel College on Saturday at 3PM.
