The Saint Vincent men's basketball team opened the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs with a solid 72-54 win against Grove City at the Carey Center. With this decisive win, the Bearcats advanced to the semifinal round and will host Bethany College at 7PM Thursday night.
Saint Vincent roared out to a 16-2 lead in the first half with points from five different players, including eight from junior Tauvon Pettiford (8-14 from the floor). SVC's defensive 3-2 zone also posed problems for the Wolverines until the 11:55 mark when Grove City began to gain some momentum on offense, pulling to within five points of the Bearcats with 5:30 left in the half. Going into halftime, the score was 29-25 Saint Vincent.
Grove City's Luke Tomaselli (10-20) scored the first points of the second half, but from that moment forward, Saint Vincent took control. The Bearcats went on a ten-point run early in the half that included two conventional three-point plays from freshman forward Mike Burroughs (4-6). Burroughs went one for two on the extra free throws. SVC commanded its largest lead of the game at 24 points with 3:17 remaining in the half. Grove City would score the last six points of the game to make the final score 72-54 Bearcats.
Saint Vincent's scoring leaders were Pettiford with 21, Dennis Bassich with 16 and BJ McGill with 15. Burroughs also had a season-high 11. Pettiford led the team in rebounds with 9, while Latus added 8.
Grove City was led by Tomaselli with 21 points, followed by Kris Verderber with 12 and Brett Matson with 7. The Wolverines were just 36% from the floor.
With the win, Saint Vincent improves to 19-7 on the season, while Grove City finishes at 5-21.
