The Saint Vincent softball team opened the home portion of its 2011 season in fine fashion, earning a doubleheader sweep over visiting Pitt-Greensburg.
The Bearcats opened the day with an 8-0 blanking of the Bobcats, before taking the nightcap 3-1.
In the opener, Saint Vincent got off to a strong start, taking a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Leanna Seminsky opened the frame with a single to center field, and was driven home two batters later on a double from
Emily Petrowsky.
The Bearcats added onto their lead in the third inning.
Maria Adams socked a leadoff double, and Petrowsky followed with her second two bagger of the day to make the score 2-0.
Lindsey Daniels then singled, putting runners on first and third, before
Becky Deane cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to give the Bearcats a 4-0 advantage.
Saint Vincent closed things out with a four-run fifth inning. Adams and Petrowsky walked to begin the frame, and then
Alyssa Grossman doubled, driving in Adams and making the score 5-0. Daniels and Deane then walked to load the bases, before
Shannon Hite put the eight-run mercy rule into effect with a three-run triple, sealing the 8-0 win.
While the Bearcat bats were strong throughout, pounding out 10 hits, pitcher
Shauna Hetrick was just as masterful. She earned the complete game victory, allowing two hits and just three baserunners, striking out six.
Eight of the Bearcats' nine starters recorded at least one hit, led by Petrowsky's 2-for-2 showing, while Grossman went 2-for-3.
Danielle Straub started for UPG and worked three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with one strikeout to take the loss. Offensively, the UPG hits were recorded by Amanda Brown and Jennifer Dempsey.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats again looked to take an early lead, but the team stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames. The team would finally get on the board in the third.
Sam Shumaker belted a lead off double, and after a walk to
Lynn Buffoni and a single from Hite, Seminsky stroked an RBI single up the middle to score Shumaker. Two batters later, Hite and Seminsky crossed the plate on an Adams double, making the score 3-0.
The Bobcats cut into the SVC lead in the fifth, when Jessica Dempsey, who walked, came around on a sacrifice fly from Emily Dempsey. In the sixth, UPG again threatened, but Bearcat reliever
Emily Lauterbach pitched out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Bobcats off the board. Lauterbach then recorded the final three outs in order in the seventh, sealing the SVC doubleheader sweep.
Grossman started on the hill and earned the win, working 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Lauterbach picked up the save, failing to allow a baserunner in an inning and a third.
Offensively, SVC again belted out 10 hits, led by Adams, who went 3-for-4, while Seminsky and Shumaker each recorded two hits.
The Bearcats (2-0) will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting a doubleheader with Penn State-Fayette beginning at 1pm.
