Bearcats, Mounties split doubleheader

The Saint Vincent softball team split a doubleheader on the road at Mount Aloysius College, winning the opener 3-0 before suffering their first defeat of the season, 6-2, in the second game.

In the opener, pitcher Alyssa Grossman improved to 3-0, throwing a complete game three-hitter, allowing just three hits and one walk with six strikeouts.  

The Bearcats got on the board in the second inning.  Lindsey Daniels led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Emily Lauterbach.  Shumaker followed with an RBI double, making the score 1-0.

Saint Vincent would up the lead to 2-0 in the fourth by utilizing small ball.  Emily Petrowsky led off with a walk, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Daniels. A single from Lauterbach moved Petrowsky to third, and Shumaker followed with a sacrifice fly for her second RBI on the day.

The visitors would score their final run of the opener in the fifth, when Leanna Seminsky, who led off by reaching on an error, was driven home on an RBI single from Petrowsky.   For the game, the Bearcats out-hit the Mounties 8-3, improving to 5-0 on the season.

In the nightcap, Mt. Aloysius jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, and the deficit proved insurmountable for the Bearcats.  Saint Vincent scored its lone run in the sixth inning, as Shannon Hite and Seminsky hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, and were both doubled home by Maria Adams.

The Bearcats managed six hits in the nightcap, as Seminsky went 2-for-4 and Hite 2-for-3, but the double from Adams was the lone extra base hit of the game for Saint Vincent.  Shauna Hetrick started in the circle and took the loss, working two innings and allowing three runs with two strikeouts.  Lauterbach came on in relief to throw the final five innings.

After the split, the Bearcats' see their record move to 5-1 on the year, while Mt. Aloysius is now 5-4.  Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday afternoon, traveling to Steubenville, OH to take on Franciscan University in a non-conference doubleheader.
