Bearcat lacrosse wins big in home opener

Box Score

The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team opened the home portion of its 2011 schedule in style, defeating visiting Oberlin College 17-4 on the windy, soggy Saint Vincent Turf.

Eight different Bearcats scored at least one goal, as Saint Vincent out-shot the Yeomen 46-27 and owned a 17-8 edge in faceoffs.

Will Delanoy led the way offensively for Saint Vincent (3-1), posting a six-point day, with three goals and three assists.  He was one of three Bearcats to net the hat trick, as Ryan Kearney and Jake Dick also tallied three goals apiece.  Zach Wilfong was a fourth Bearcat to enjoy a multi-point day, scoring a goal with two helpers.

The Bearcats got off to a strong start, with Mike Diggs putting the hosts up 1-0 just under  two minutes into play.  Saint Vincent then quickly upped the lead to 3-0 with 9:05 left in the first quarter, as Sam Futrovsky and Jake Dick scored just 30 seconds apart.  A Pete Hronis goal at the 8:17 mark would make the score 4-0, before Oberlin scored the final two goals of the quarter to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Saint Vincent then effectively put the game away in the second quarter, out-scoring the Yeomen 6-0.  DeLanoy scored two second quarter goals, while Kearney, Dick, Wilfong, and Pete McGee also added tallies, to give the Bearcats a 10-2 halftime lead.

The Bearcats would continue the run by scoring the lone two goals of the third quarter, by Vinnie DeSantis and Anthony Altieri, to put the Bearcats up 13-2 heading into the final stanza, before a goal apiece from Dick and DeLanoy, and two from Kearney, capped off the long 12-0 run and put SVC on top 16-2 with 8:26 left in the fourth quarter.

Oberlin's Dylan Holmes stopped the run with a goal with 7:33 left, before the Bearcats' Kullen Adams made the score 17-3 with his first career goal, scored with 1:42 remaining on the clock.   The Yeomen would close the day's scoring out with 42 seconds remaining, on a goal by Matthew Rogers.

A total of 13 Saint Vincent players posted at least one point, as Alex Walsh and Will Selmayer each added one assist to join the eight different goal scorers.

For the game, the Bearcats also owned a 41-28 advantage in ground balls, led by seven from Sean Kretovics, who was also impressive in the faceoff circle, winning eight of 10.  Adam Gunter started in goal, earning the win by posting three saves in 45 minutes of action.  Logan Hoffman came on in relief of Gunter in the fourth quarter and was impressive, making seven stops over the final 15 minutes.

In addition to Holmes, Oberlin also received goals from Matthew Rogers, Thomas Hake, and Connor Jackson.  Thomas Cool started and played all 60 minutes in goal for the Yeomen (1-1), finishing with nine saves.

The four goals surrendered by the Bearcats marked the fewest in nearly three years, dating back to the team's 22-2 victory in the 2008 season finale against Wells College.

Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Christopher Newport at 1pm.
