Bearcats win big in home finale

BOX SCORE

The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team improved to 9-3 on the season with a convincing 13-3 victory over Washington & Jefferson on the Bearcat Turf.

The nine wins in a season are the most since the 2005 squad finished with 11, while the win also sealed a 6-1 home record for SVC in 2011.

Ryan Kearney led all scorers with five goals, and was one of four players to record multi-point games for the Bearcats.  Will DeLanoy finished with a goal and four assists, taking over the program's all-time lead for career assists, as he now has 79 helpers in just three years.  Zach Wilfong scored three goals with one helper, while Jake Dick also finished with the hat trick.

For the game, the Bearcats out-shot the Presidents 45-22, while SVC also held a commanding edge in ground balls, 49-24, led by the duo of DeLanoy and Pete Hronis, who each scooped up six.  The Bearcats also owned the edge in face offs, 18-10, with Hronis winning five.

Saint Vincent took control early, with Wilfong scoring off an assist from DeLanoy just 1:21 into play, giving the Bearcats the early 1-0 lead.  Three minutes later, Dick scored his first of the afternoon to give SVC the two-goal lead, before DeLanoy and Kearney scored 90 seconds apart to push SVC in front 4-0 with 4:19 left in the opening quarter.

Washington & Jefferson scored the final goal of the first stanza, with just 44 seconds remaining, but two goals from Dick in the second quarter would send the Bearcats into halftime with a commanding 6-1 advantage.

The Bearcats would put the game away in the third, out-scoring the Presidents 3-1, with two goals from Kearney and one from Wilfong, to take a 9-2 lead into the final quarter.  After W&J scored its final goal of the afternoon in the opening minute of the fourth, the Bearcats ended the game with four unanswered goals - two from Wilfong, and one apiece from Kearney and Sean Kretovics - to ice the win.

Adam Gunter started in goal for SVC and earned the win, making 10 saves, before giving way to Logan Hoffmann, who came on in relief with five minutes left in the fourth quarter and stopped two shots.

Washington & Jefferson was led on the scoresheet by Joseph Eck, who scored two goals, while Presidents' goalie Ran Kirby made 13 saves.

The Bearcats will now wrap up the regular season with a pair of road games, beginning with a trip to North Carolina to take on Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon.
