The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team was dealt a devastating 20-19 overtime loss to Greensboro College on the road in North Carolina.
Trailing 18-12 with 13:18 left in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats outscored the Pride 7-1 over the closing minutes of regulation, only to see Greensboro's Bill Blakely score the game winner with 3:05 left in overtime.
The Bearcats got off to a strong start, taking a 5-0 lead midway into the opening quarter, on two goals from
Zach Wilfong and one apiece from
Ryan Kearney,
Jake Dick and
Will DeLanoy. However, the Pride responded to score the final five goals of the first quarter to send the game into the second tied at 5-5.
Greensboro eventually jumped ahead 7-5 with two quick goals to open the third quarter, but the Bearcats battled back to take a 9-8 halftime advantage, with DeLanoy scoring twice and Kearney and
Mike Diggs once over the final seven minutes of the half.
The Pride would then take the momentum in a big way, outscoring Saint Vincent 8-3 over the third quarter to head into the final stanza in front 16-12. The Greensboro lead would eventually grow to 18-12
with 13:18 remaining, but the Bearcats would respond in a big way.
DeLanoy and Wilfong scored 20 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 18-14 with 11:41 left, and after five scoreless minutes, the Bearcats'
Vincenzo DiSantis would cut the deficit to four, 19-15, on a goal assisted by DeLanoy with 6:40 remaining. The Bearcats would continue the offensive surge, with Kearney netting his fourth goal of the day to make the score 19-16 with 2:52 left, before Wilfong would score twice in a 40-second span to bring the Bearcats to within one with 1:27 remaining.
Dick's second goal of the day would tie the game at 19 with 31 seconds left, and after winning the ensuing face off, the Bearcats looked primed to take the lead, with
Alex Walsh burying a shot at the buzzer. However, officials deemed the ball found the back of the net a split second after the final whistle, and the game would go to overtime.
After two minutes of scoreless play, the Pride would end the game, with Blakely scoring his ninth goal of the day with 3:05 left in the extra session to seal the wild win.
Seven different players scored at least one goal for the Bearcats, with Wilfong leading the way, posting a nine-point day on six goals and three assists. DeLanoy posted seven points, on four goals and three helpers, while Kearney posted five points, on four goals and one assist.
The Bearcats were out-shot 53-50 for the game, but SVC did own a 41-39 advantage in ground balls, with four apiece from DeSantis, Kearney, Wilfong, and
Brendan Cannon.
Blakely had a monster day for the Pride (4-9), scoring nine goals, while Jaeger Carlyle scored four goals with one assist.
The Bearcats (9-4) will now wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, traveling to Ohio Wesleyan for a 7pm game that will be broadcast live online
