LATROBE (Sept. 21) - Behind two early goals, the Saint Vincent women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 victory over visiting Muskingum on the SVC Turf. The game was delayed approximately 40 minutes after the first half due to lightning, but the two teams came out and completed the game in a steady rain.
Just seven minutes in, freshman
Elly Colvin recorded the eventual game-winner of a pass from sophomore
Tenesha Corrales. The ball went high off Colvin's foot and deflected off Muskies' keeper Sarah Poling's hands before finding the back of the net.
Under 18 minutes later, the two switched roles as Colvin found Corrales for the insurance score. After a corner kick by sophomore
Monika Derboghossian, the ball careened off a Muskingum defender to Colvin who made the pass to Corrales who found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
For the game, the Bearcats held a 21-12 edge on shots and recorded more corner kicks, 7-3. Derboghossian led the way with five shots, while freshman
Abbey Neish added four shots and Corrales posted three. Colvin, senior
Carly Duffy, sophomore
Elyse Togliatti and freshman
Amie Dobracki each tallied a pair of shots in the win.
Saint Vincent keeper
Kirstie Mills played all 90 minutes and improved her record to 3-3-1. The senior made three saves while posting her first shutout of the year (two combined shutouts). Poling suffered the loss for Muskingum, allowing both scores and recording eight saves.
The Bearcats improve their overall record to 3-3-1 on the season, while Muskingum drops to 2-6 in 2011.
SVC returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Huntingdon, PA to play Juniata at 1 p.m. in a match that was delayed from earlier in the season due to poor weather conditions and flooding.
