Bearcats earn hard-fought win over Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Jan. 28) - The Bearcats ended the game with a 19-7 run over the final seven minutes to defeat Grove City College on the road by a score of 62-57 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

With the win, the Saint Vincent men's basketball team improves to 14-5 overall and 7-3 in PAC action. Meanwhile, Grove City falls to 7-12 on the season and 3-8 in league play.

With a little over five minutes to play in the game, the Wolverines built their biggest lead of the afternoon, seven points, 50-43. Senior guard Dennis Bassich then hit three pointers on back-to-back trips down the court to spark the final run and cut the deficit to one point, 50-49.

After a Grove City foul shot, senior guard Tauvon Pettiford gave the Bearcats the lead, 52-51 on a traditional three-point play. Sophomore forward Dillon Stith added to the lead with a layup at the 3:26-mark to stretch the lead, 54-51.

Another GCC basket was answered by a Pettiford layup with 2:05 remaining before the next points came with under one minute left when the Wolverines made it a one-point game, 56-55.

SVC went six-for-six on free-throws over the final 35.5 seconds to build a 62-55 edge. Junior guard Chris Klimchock hit both of his chances while Bassich and Pettiford each sunk both freebies.

In the first half, SVC took a 26-25 lead into the half. Stith started the game with a three pointer under a minute in and Klimchock extended the lead to 6-2 with a triple of his own.

With SVC trailing, 23-21, and just over two minutes remaining Klimchock sparked a 5-0 run that sent SVC into the locker room with the lead.

Pettiford led all scorers with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Bassich added 12 points off the bench and Klimchock chipped on 11 points and four assists. Stith finished with seven points and a tied for the game-best nine rebounds.

Brett Matson finished with 19 points to lead Grove City in scoring. Teammate Kris Verderber added 16 points.

SVC returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, hosting Thiel at 7:30 p.m. in the Carey Center.
