LATROBE (Oct. 27) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team got goals from 11 different players and tied a program record with 13 goals as it closed out the 2012 regular season with a 13-0 win over Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
With the win, the Bearcats finish the regular season with an 11-6 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season which was previously set in 2005, and a 4-5 mark in PAC play. Chatham drops to 2-13 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
SVC had scored 13 goals in a game twice before, in 2000 against Pitt-Greensburg, and in 2005 against Carlow.
The Bearcats scored six goals in the first half, including two by junior
Rebecca Sandor. Junior
Monika Derboghossian started the scoring at the 11:08-mark when she chipped the keeper from 25 yards out, 1-0. In the 23rd minute, senior
Catherine Czapski recorded her first goal of the season with an assist to freshman
Emily Johns.
Sandor's first goal came at the 30:06 point when she dribbled past her defender and finished high nearside. Six minutes later, junior
Jennifer Kisner tallied her first goal of the season off of a cross from Johns. In the 41st minute, senior
Emily Taylor recorded her first career goal on a penalty kick to give SVC a 5-0 lead. Sandor closed out the first half scoring with a breakaway goal for her team-leading seventh of the season at the 43:11 mark.
SVC struck early in the second half as junior
Tenesha Corrales extended the lead to 7-0 just 1:51 into the period. In the 56th minute senior
Anna Rutledge posted her first career goal on a breakaway.
The Bearcats next two goals came just 39 seconds apart as Johns and junior
Lindsey Daniels each recorded their first goals of the season at 76:41 and 77:18, respectively.
Rutledge's second goal of the game pushed the margin to 11-0 at the 85:14-mark. Junior
Abbey Neish scored her fifth goal of the season in the 88th minute and then assisted on freshman
Meghan Smith's second goal of the season just 56 seconds later.
For the game, SVC out-shot Chatham, 59-0, finishing just six shots shy of the school record of 65 set in 2000 against Pitt-Greensburg. Smith led the team with 12 shots, while Johns finished with 10 shots. Rutledge posted eight shots, while eight different Bearcats tallied at least three shots apiece.
Junior
Cassie Overly earned the win in goal while playing the first 62:09 of the game before giving way to sophomore
Kelsey Farrand, who played the final 27:51.
The Bearcats will now see if they have earned a bid to the ECAC South Tournament, which is set to be held on Nov. 7 and 10-11.
