BETHANY, W.Va. (Nov. 10) - The Bearcats scored a season-high 27 points, but also allowed a season-worst 54 points as they dropped the annual Green Game at Bethany, 54-27, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action to close out the 2012 season.
With the loss, the Saint Vincent football team finishes the year with an 0-10 record and 0-8 mark in the PAC. It marks the third time since the rebirth of football in 2007 that SVC ended the season winless (2007, 2009). Bethany improves to 3-7 on the season and 3-5 in the PAC.
The Bison scored the first 34 points of the game to open up a 34-0 lead with 7:46 remaining in the first half. After the Bearcats forced a punt on the first two drives, a fumble on the second return setup Bethany with the ball at the SVC 15 yard line. Two plays later, Bethany QB Matt Grimard went 11 yards for the Bison touchdown, 7-0.
Following an SVC three-and-out, Bethany put together an eight-play, 70-yard drive to take a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter.
Grimard then threw touchdown passes on consecutive drives of 52 and 21 yards to extend the Bison lead to 28-0 with 9:05 to play in the first half. On the ensuing drive, Bethany forced a punt by sophomore
Morgan Porter that was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Michael Howcott, but sophomore
Darius Brown blocked the point-after attempt and made it 34-0.
On the second play of the following drive, sophomore quarterback
Matt Deakins found freshman wide receiver
Alex Charles for a 70-yard catch-and-run that put SVC on the scoreboard, 34-7.
After the Bearcats' junior linebacker
Nick Revis forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing drive, Bethany was able to cause a Saint Vincent fumble that led to a 37-yard touchdown pass from Grimard to Holmes, the second score between the two of the half.
With under one minute to play in the second quarter, sophomore
Anthony May sacked Grimard and forced a fumble that was recovered by freshman linebacker
Renny LaRue-Holloman. The fumble led to a 25-yard touchdown pass from Deakins to senior wide receiver
Ricky Douglas, who passed former wide receiver Sheldon Loughner for the modern-era receiving yards record with the catch, 41-14.
To start the second half, Brown returned the kickoff 74 yards to the Bethany 15-yard line and freshman running back
Ryan Crawford carried the next three plays, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown run, 41-21.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Deakins found sophomore wide receiver
Matt Duffey for an eight-yard touchdown, that was set up by a 27-yard kickoff return by sophomore
Lazaro Garcia and a 42-yard run by Crawford, 54-27.
For the game, Bethany out-gained SVC, 440-236 behind 290 yards passing. SVC managed just 31 net rushing yards, led by 39 yards by Crawford.
Deakins completed 10-of-21 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.
Charles posted a game- and season-best 122 yards on four catches, marking the first time SVC had a 100-yard receiver since Douglas had 141 yards last year in the ECAC Southwest Bowl against Lebanon Valley. Douglas finished with two catches for 44 yards and is now the modern-era career receiving yards leader.
Defensively, junior
Nick Revis led the team with 14 tackles (six solo), while also posting 1.0 tackle for loss and forcing and recovering a fumble. LaRue-Holloman posted 13 stops (seven solo) in the game to move into a tie for second place in the modern era with 102 tackles on the season. He also added 2.5 TFL to finish the season with 16.0 TFL, which establishes a new modern record, passing
David Ribero's mark of 13.5 in 2009.
Sophomore
Ryan Schmid and senior
Jovaughn Johnson each added nine tackles in the loss.
