Bearcats split season openers in Florida

The Saint Vincent softball team opened the 2012 season with a 4-1 victory over Elizabethtown College in Clermont, FL.  Later in the evening, Carroll University shut down the SVC offense, 3-0.

Against Elizabethtown, the Bearcats used a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to post the win. Emily Petrowsky led off the fifth by reaching on an error and later scored on a triple by Shannon Hite, who scored on a groundout by Suzie Cool.

In the sixth, Shannon Baczek led off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Lindsey Daniels. Petrowsky then walked and advanced to second when Lynn Buffoni reached on an error. Hite drove in Petrowsky once again with an RBI single to close out the scoring.

Daniels and Hite each led the way with two hits, with Hite driving in two runs and Daniels and Cool adding RBI.

Alyssa Grossman earned the win, tossing 7.0 innings and scattering four hits and one earned run. She struck out one batter and walked none while facing just five hitters over the minimum.

In the second game Ally Vrcek suffered the loss after allowing all three runs in 4.0 innings. She allowed five hits and struck out six compared to just one walk. Emily Lauterbach pitched the final 3.0 innings and surrendered just two hits with two strikeouts.

Carroll scored two runs in the third inning before adding an insurance run in the fourth inning.

Baczek collected two of the Bearcats' five hits in the nightcap with Maria Adams, Becky Deane and Megan Regula each adding a hit.

The Bearcats play two games tomorrow against Misericordia (9 AM) and Lebanon Valley (11 AM).
