The Bearcat softball team lost the first game of a split doubleheader, falling to John Carroll University by a score of 3-0. In the second game of the day, SVC topped Marywood, 8-1.
Saint Vincent was held to just four hits in the first game of the day, as JCU scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning - only one of which was earned.
Ally Vrcek took the hard-luck loss, striking out five in four innings.
Emily Lauterbach worked two scoreless innings in relief.
Offensively,
Shannon Hite,
Maria Adams,
Becky Deane and
Megan Regula all singled for Saint Vincent.
In game two, Hite set the tone in the bottom of the first, leading off with a triple. She then scored on a ground ball by
Lindsey Daniels.
SVC added to the lead in the second, when
Lynn Buffoni singled home
Sam Shumaker, who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
In the third,
Becky Deane led off with a double and later scored on an error, giving SVC a 3-0 advantage.
After Marywood scored once in the fourth, SVC came back with a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to cruise to victory.
Alyssa Grossman scattered five hits over six innings of work to earn her second win of the week, striking out five. Lauterbach pitched a scoreless seventh.
The Bearcats tallied 11 hits in the game, with Hite, Deane and
Suzie Cool leading the attack with two hits each.
Saint Vincent is now 3-3 on the season and will wrap up its Florida trip on Wednesday with games against Marywood (5PM) and Division II Bemidji State (7PM). Both games will be broadcast live on the Saint Vincent Sports Network.
