The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets ended Saint Vincent's unbeaten streak in conference play, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 4-3.
SVC entered the day 6-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Waynesburg was winless in six conference games.
In game one, the Bearcats took the lead in the top of the third, when
Lindsey Daniels singled and stole second. After
Becky Deane walked,
Shannon Baczek drove home Daniels with a single. Deane later scored on a single by
Ally Vrcek, making it 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Rachael Moon doubled home one run, but a second runner was gunned out at the plate, with
Suzie Cool relaying to
Emily Petrowsky, who threw to catcher
Maria Adams for the out, keeping it a one-run SVC lead.
However, the hosts came back and scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead on a Jasmine Blackwell bases-loaded triple.
SVC refused to give up, coming back in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Vrcek led off with a double, then scored on a single by
Sam Shumaker.
Shauna Hetrick then singled, moving Shumaker to second. Pinch-runner
Mikele Prokopovich later scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
However, in the bottom of the 7th, a single and an error put the winning run at second, then an infield single moved the runner to third. Ashley Clark then singled home the game-winner.
Emily Lauterbach suffered the loss, working six innings and striking out two. Vrcek went 3-for-3 to lead the offense.
In game two, Daniels led off the bottom of the first with a home run, her first of the season.
Maria Adams then followed with a double, moved to third on a single by Baczek, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Vrcek to make it 2-0.
Two innings later, Deane led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Baczek. Shumaker then singled home the Bearcats' third run of the game.
However, the hosts then came back and scored an unearned run in the fourth, then added three runs on three hits in the fifth, taking a 4-3 lead. The Bearcats were unable to recover, dropping the second game 4-3.
Vrcek worked five innings - striking out seven - and took the loss, while Lauterbach pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Daniels, Baczek and Adams each had two hits for Saint Vincent.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, hosting Washington & Jefferson at 1PM in conference play.
