LATROBE (Apr. 5) - The Saint Vincent softball team ran it's winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of Thiel, 5-2 and 5-0, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
With the sweep, the Bearcats remain unbeaten in PAC action at 6-0 while improving to 17-7 on the season after a 7-7 start. Thiel falls to 8-14 on the season and evens its league record at 3-3.
In game one, SVC scored a run in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by junior
Sam Shumaker, her team-leading third of the season.
The Bearcats picked up four runs in the third inning to open up a 5-0 advantage. Freshman
Suzie Cool led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a single by sophomore
Lindsey Daniels. The two then executed a double steal with Cool scoring the first run of the game. Daniels advanced to third on a single by junior
Maria Adams and later scored on an RBI ground out by sophomore
Becky Deane. A single by sophomore
Ally Vrcek advanced Adams to third base and both runners scored on a two-run single by Shumaker.
The Tomcats scored their first run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo homer by Angelina Masters, the first earned run allowed by junior
Emily Lauterbach this season. She started the year by going the first 44.1 innings without giving up an earned run. Thiel scored again in the top of the seventh inning on another solo homer by Masters.
Lauterbach earned the win to improve to 6-1 on the season. She went the distance, allowing just three hits and two runs (both earned) while striking out three and issuing no free passes. In 47.0 innings this season, the righty has allowed just two earned runs while posting a 0.30 earned-run average.
Adams and Shumaker both finished 2-for-2, with Shumaker tallying a homer and three RBI in the first game.
In the second game, SVC scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. A one-out single by Daniels started the frame, and she came in to score on an RBI double by Adams, 1-0. A double by freshman
Shannon Baczek scored Adams, Deane scored from third on a wild pitch and Shumaker drove in Baczek with a single to post four runs in the inning.
The Bearcats added an insurance run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Baczek to tally the final margin, 5-0.
Vrcek picked up the win, going the distance to improve to 3-2 on the year. She scattered five hits and didn't yield a run, striking out six and walking two. She dropped her ERA on the season to 0.71.
For the 2012 season, the Bearcats have a team ERA of 0.95 through 24 games. During the current 10-game winning streak, SVC has allowed just five runs with seven shutouts.
Baczek was strong for SVC, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Adams and Daniels each went 2-for-4, with Adams contributing a double and two runs.
SVC returns to action following the Easter break on Monday, Apr. 9, traveling to cross-town rival Pitt-Greensburg for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
