OBERLIN, Ohio (May 2) - Senior
Mike Diggs posted the game-winner just 10 seconds into the second overtime to give the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team an 8-7 win at Oberlin, in a game held at Fred Shults Field.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 5-9 with one regular season game left this year. The Yeomen drop to 5-10 on the season and just 1-5 at home.
After an Oberlin push allowed SVC to start the second overtime with the ball, Diggs needed just 10 seconds to split the defense and tally the game-winning score on a man-down opportunity.
Sophomore
Sean Kretovics gave the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter tallying goals at the 10:25 and 4:32 marks. Oberlin recorded its first goal of the game with 32 seconds left in the first quarter to head to the second period with a 2-1 score.
After a Yeoman goal tied the game just under four minutes in to the second quarter, Kretovics posted his hat-trick goal at 9:16 to play in the first half on an assist by freshman
Nick Pensyl.
Oberlin scored four-straight goals to take a 6-3 lead with 6:03 to play in the third quarter before SVC mounted the comeback. All-time points leader senior
Will DeLanoy scored consecutive goals to make it a one-goal game, 6-5, before sophomore
Jeremy McGuire tied the game, 6-6, 1:11 into the fourth period.
With the Bearcats trailing 7-6 and under one minute remaining in regulation, Diggs posted his first score of the afternoon with 38 seconds remaining to force the overtime, setting the table for his game-winner in the second period of extra time.
For the game, SVC out-shot Oberlin, 51-38, and recorded two more ground balls, 39-37.
DeLanoy led all players with 13 shots in the game while Diggs added nine shots.
Junior
Adam Gunter earned the win in net, playing the entire game and making 19 saves.
SVC closes out the season with a Senior Day match-up against Frostburg State (Md.) on Saturday, May 5 at Chuck Noll Field.
