The Bridgewater College Eagles defeated Saint Vincent by a score of 23-7 in the season opener for the Bearcats at Chuck Noll Field.

Neither team in the non-conference matchup was able to generate much offense in the first quarter, with teams trading two punts each.

Early in the second quarter SVC fumbled, giving the Eagles the ball near midfield, but the Bearcats defense one again held, forcing Bridgewater to punt for the fourth time in four possessions.

After another Bearcat punt, the Eagles generated some offense, working the ball down to the Bearcat three-yard-line with four minutes left in the half, before a penalty moved the ball back to the eight.  Once again, the SVC defense held, forcing a 25-yard field goal attempt that was missed wide, and the game remained scoreless at the half.

Saint Vincent had the first possession of the second half, but a fumble once again gave the Eagles the ball, this time at the Bearcat 25.  After three stops by the SVC defense, the visitors lined up for a 34-yard field goal attempt, but once again it missed wide to the right, and the score remained 0-0.

After another Bearcat punt, however, the Eagles managed to put together the game's first scoring drive.  On a second down play, Willie Logan completed  a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jayme Perry for a score, and the ensuing extra point made it 7-0 with 7:26 left in the third quarter.

Three plays later, a tipped pass led to an interception by the Eagles' Andrew Palmer, ultimately setting up a nine-yard strike from Logan to Nick Wimer for a touchdown.

Down 14-0 early in the fourth, the SVC offense went to work behind quarterback Andy Borgen.  After short completions to Scott Weaver and Ricky Douglas, Borgen called his own number, picking up 20 yards on a run to the Bridgewater 40.  After a pass interference call moved the ball to the 25, a run by Huey Ehredt took the ball to the 18.  A catch by Ryan Crawford with a defender in his face at the one yard line then set up a touchdown pass to fullback David Emmanuel, getting the Bearcats on the board.  Morgan Porter's extra point made it a seven point game, 14-7.

After the Eagles were stopped on their next possession, punter Tyler Dawson had a punt downed at the one-yard-line.  On the next play, Ehredt was stopped in the backfield, and the safety made the score 16-7.

Bridgewater added another late touchdown to make it 23-7.

Overall, Bridgewater held a 334-278 advantage in total yardage, but outgained SVC 204-106 on the ground.  The other key stat for the day were the Bearcats' four turnovers, while the Eagles stayed error-free.

Jacob Wright of Bridgewater carried the ball 21 times for 109 yards, while Logan was 16-24 through the air for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

For Saint Vincent, Ehredt gained 26 yards on 10 carries.  Borgen was 10-17 for 116 yards passing, while starter Manny Speal was 6-10 for 75 yards.  Ricky Douglas was the game's top receiver, catching five passes for 88 yards.

Defensively, Jovaughn Johnson led the SVC defense with 9 tackles, while Michael Valdes and Josh Pomilio each recorded six.  Willie Propps led the Eagle defense with 9 tackles including one sack.

Saint Vincent will host the College of Wooster next Saturday at 1PM at Chuck Noll Field in non-conference action.
