The Bearcats lost a closely contested game, 27-21 in overtime, to the College of Wooster in the first OT game ever at Chuck Noll Field.
Wooster got off to a quick start despite the heavy rain and muddy field conditions. After a fumble by SVC, the Fighting Scots' Richard Barnes connected with Joe Stoffer for a 42-yard touchdown pass that gave the visitors a 7-0 lead.
Later in the first, the Bearcats tied the game. After driving the ball to the 2-yard-line, SVC faced a fourth-and-one. Quarterback
Manny Speal handed off to
Huey Ehredt, who stopped and tossed a jump-pass to tight end
Cody Strelick, who was wide open in the end zone for the score.
On their next possession, the Fighting Scots' Jonathan Miller broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run to make it 14-7, but once again the Bearcats fought back. Speal completed 23-yard passes to both
Ricky Douglas and
Ryan Crawford, then Crawford later finished the drive with a 2-yard run.
Morgan Porter's extra point tied the game at 14-14 with 10:12 left in the first half.
Near the end of half, Saint Vincent embarked on another drive, but appeared to stall at the Wooster 26. On a fourth-and-10 play, Speal kept it himself and ran for 11 yards to keep the drive alive, then hit Strelick for a touchdown pass with just 12 ticks left on the clock, giving the hosts a 21-14 lead at the break.
Late in the third quarter, Barnes and Shawn Bowman teamed for a 35-yard TD pass that tied the game at 21, and neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter, sending the game to overtime.
Wooster (1-1) won the coin toss to start the OT period, electing to give the Bearcats the ball. By rule, the ball was placed on the Wooster 25. The Bearcats were stopped on three quick plays, forcing Porter to attempt a 44-yard field goal. While the kick had plenty of distance, it missed wide left.
The visitors then lined up to take their shot from the 25, and the Bearcat defense stuffed the Wooster run game on two consecutive plays, setting up a third-and-11. However, Barnes scrambled for 11 yards to the Bearcat 15, good for a fresh set of downs. Two plays later, Chase Ullman ran 13 yards into the end zone for the game-winner.
For the game, Saint Vincent out-gained Wooster 338-311. Ehredt led all rushers with 118 yards on 25 carries, while Jonathan Miller carried the ball 12 times for 103 yards for Wooster.
Matt Duffey caught six passes for SVC, good for 75 yards, while Douglas and Strelick had four catches each.
Speal went 17-for-36 through the air for Saint Vincent, for 192 yards. Barnes was 14-25 for Wooster, good for 155 yards.
Brandon James recorded 10 tackles for Wooster, while
Renny LaRue-Holloman topped the defensive scoresheet for the Bearcats with nine.
Saint Vincent (0-2) will host Waynesburg University next Saturday at Chuck Noll Field. Kickoff is 1PM.
