The Bearcats defeated the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg 67-59 Wednesday night at the Robert S. Carey Gymnasium.
The game began as a defensive struggle with a total of eight points scored between both teams in the first five minutes.
Isaac Turner contributed the first six points for Saint Vincent. Yet the Bearcats never led by more than five points within the first 15 minutes of the game.
A layup and two free throws by
Sean Kett helped SVC to create a nine-point margin late in the second half. But a buzzer-beating three by Thomas Ellis allowed the Yellow Jackets to remain within six points going into the half.
Waynesburg came out of halftime with a jumper by Nate Lebishak to pull within 4 points, but SVC responded with a
Grant Latus layup and five points from
Isaac Turner to take its largest lead of the evening 36-25.
Following a conventional three-point play by
Isaac Turner at the 10:46 mark, Saint Vincent took a 9-point lead. Waynesburg roared back scoring seven points to make the score 46-42 with 8:15 remaining in the half. At the 5:09 mark, Kenny Klase hit a three to bring the Yellow Jackets within two points, but they would not get any closer. Strong free throw shooting by the Bearcats at the end of the half allowed them to maintain a comfortable point margin.
Turner led the Bearcats in scoring with 21 points, followed by Kett with 14. Thomas Ellis led Waynesburg with 16 points, followed by Lebishak with 12.
Latus contributed 12 rebounds on the evening, while Waynesburg's Jacob Fleegle had 6.
With this win, the Bearcats matched last season's win total at 19.
