Bearcats upset 22-time champions Grove City

BOX SCORE

In a match that will raise eyebrows around the Presidents' Athletic Conference, the Saint Vincent College men's tennis team knocked off 22-time defending champion Grove City.  The Bearcats emerged as 5-4 victors after a long, grueling three and a half-hour battle.

Tony Costantino sealed the match by coming from one set down to beat Caleb Fuller at second singles in the day's final event.

The match started poorly for Saint Vincent when Nathan Walch and Sean Malone fell 8-1 at #3 doubles, but their teammates made sure the Bearcats did not finish doubles play in a hole.  Anthony Nemanic and David Cenkner played a scintillating match at #1 doubles.  Nemanic had a chance to serve out the match at 7-6, but dropped serve after a game that went to several deuces.  However, Nemanic and Cenkner responded, breaking the serve of the Wolverine's Peter Riley before Cenkner held serve to clinch a 9-7 win.

At #2 doubles, Chris Andrejcik and Costantino, playing together for the first time, crafted an 8-4 victory.  At the end of doubles play Saint Vincent led 2-1 and needed to win just half of the singles matches to upset the Wolverines.

Nemanic was all business at #3 singles, knocking off Grove City's Andrew Deckert 6-3, 6-1.  But Anthony Rosselli responded by beating Nathan Walch, making the match score 3-2 in favor of the Bearcats.

Next, Cenkner beat last season's PAC Player of the Year Riley in straight sets by identical 6-3 scores.  At this point, Saint Vincent needed only one more point to clinch the match.

At #5 singles, Colby Beighey extended the match when he beat Andrejcik in straight sets.  Malone, playing the sixth position, lost the first set but dug in and won the second 6-1.  However, he could not clinch the match and lost 6-4 in the deciding set.

With the match tied 4-4, the winner of the #2 singles match between Costantino and Caleb Fuller would also bring home the victory for their team.   Costantino lost the first set 6-3, but he evened the match by taking the second set 6-4.  He then secured the win for Saint Vincent by holding serve at 5-3 in the last set.

The top of the lineup was dominant for the Bearcats in their triumph.  Saint Vincent won at 1st and 2nd doubles, while also claiming wins at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd singles.  Cenkner, Nemanic, and Costantino emerged victorious in both their singles and doubles matches.

Saint Vincent improved to 2-3 on the year, 1-0 in conference play.  They return to action against the Westminster Titans on Tuesday.
