Men's Lacrosse rolls past Bethany, 29-3

LATROBE (March 2) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team nearly matched the frigid temperatures outside with a 29-goal explosion in a 29-3 win over Bethany in the 2013 home opener on the SVC Turf.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 at home. The 29 goals in the game matched the school record for single-game goals, set in 2011 against Thiel. Bethany drops to 0-2 this year.

The Bearcats posted the first 15 goals of the game to open up a 15-0 lead into the second quarter. SVC out-scored Bethany, 10-0, in the first quarter thanks to three goals by Nick Pensyl and two each by Zach Clark and Bryce Pasquariello.

In the second quarter, Corbin Cole and Steven Cosgrove each recorded their second goals of the game, and Clark posted the hat trick before Bethany's Kyle Arrington got the Bison on the board at the 4:19 mark. SVC held a 16-1 lead at halftime.

Bethany answered the opening goal of the second half with a score by Trey Moore before Clark recorded back-to-back scores and Pasquariello (two goals) and Pensyl added the next three SVC markers. The third quarter closed with SVC ahead 23-3.

In the fourth quarter, JD Mayer found the back of the next to start the period and Abe Sorek added his second score on the day. Alex Walsh registered his first goal of the afternoon during the period, while Cosgrove completed the hat trick and Clark added two more scores to lead SVC to the 29-3 win.

Clark led all players with eight points (seven goals, one assist) on 12 shots. Pensyl recorded five points (four goals, one assist) and Pasquariello tallied four points (four goals). Cosgrove finished with three points on a hat trick. In total, 19 different Bearcats recorded at least one point in the contest, with 13 scoring goals.

After out-shooting the Bison, 23-2, in the first quarter, SVC held a dominating 74-10 advantage for the game. The Bearcats also picked up 66 ground balls compared to the Bison's 19. SVC won 80 percent (28-of-35) of the face-offs for the game as Sean Kretovics (9-of-11), Charlie Russo (seven-of-eight), Peter Hronis (six-of-seven) and Kevin Schroeck (five-of-six) were strong on the draws.

Adam Gunter earned the win in goal, making one save while playing the first quarter. Logan Hoffman (15 minutes, one save) and Greg Gonzalez (30 minutes, one save) also saw time in net for SVC.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, March 8, hosting King's (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
