LATROBE (April 13) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team saw its fourth-quarter rally fall short as it dropped a 12-7 decision to visiting Christopher Newport on the SVC Turf.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 2-7 on the season, while the Captains improve their overall mark to 6-8.
Christopher Newport used a balanced scoring attack with three goals in each of the four quarters and led 9-2 after 45 minutes of play.
Jay Lunz put the Bearcats on the board at the 8:56-mark of the second quarter with an assist to
Nick Pensyl. With 29 seconds left in the third quarter,
Patrick Kenna drove the length of the field and scored an unassisted goal for SVC's second score.
After the guests scored the first goal of the final period,
Nick Pensyl and
Matt Mackey scored back-to-back goals just under two minutes apart to begin the Bearcat rally. Mackey's goal at 9:40 was answered 45 seconds later by CNU, 11-4.
JD Mayer, from
Corbin Cole, made it an 11-5 game at 6:15, but the Captains answered just 75 seconds later, 12-5.
Bryce Pasquariello cut the deficit to 12-6 at 4:48 off of a Pensyl assist and then Pasquariello assisted on a goal by
Corbin Cole just 32 seconds later, 12-7, which proved to be the game's final goal.
Pensyl led the team with three points on the day, while Cole and Pasquariello each added a pair of points.
For the game, CNU won 14 of 23 face-offs, and picked up 32 ground balls to 29 for SVC. The two teams were tied in shots for the game.
Adam Gunter suffered the loss in goal, making nine saves in 60 minutes.
The Bearcats will have a week off until traveling to Greensboro, N.C., for a 2 p.m. match-up with Greensboro College on Saturday, April 20.
