Presidents down Bearcats in softball twinbill

BOX SCORE - GAME ONE

BOX SCORE - GAME TWO

The SVC softball team dropped game one of a doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson by a score of 12-4, then lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in extra innings in the second game.

Sarah Swettlen tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning of game one, but the Presidents tallied a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead.

Swettlen added a home run in the third that helped to cut the margin to 5-3, but the hosts pulled away in the late innings for the win.

Emily Lauterbach (3-6) worked two innings and took the loss, walking two and striking out two.  Swettlen was 2-3 at the plate and pitched two innings in relief, giving up just one unearned run.  Suzie Cool also added a pair of hits in the game, including a double. Lindsey Daniels was 1-3 with an RBI.

Game two turned out to be a pitchers' duel between SVC's Ally Vrcek and W&J's Krista McCartney.  The Presidents scored in the second inning, but the Bearcats came back and tied the game in the fourth, when Swettlen reached on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maria Adams, then scored on a double by Cool.

The game remained tied at one through the regulation 7 innings, but W&J scored in the eighth on a Bearcat error.

Vrcek (5-4) went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out 6.  At the plate, seven difference Bearcats had one hit each.

SVC is now 2-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
