LATROBE (April 27) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team earned a 16-7 win over Thiel on Senior Day at Chuck Noll Field.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-8 on the season after winning two-straight games. Thiel drops to 7-6 this year.
Saint Vincent opened up a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game after
JD Mayer and
Corbin Cole scored goals. Thiel got on the board with 4:21 left in the first quarter before Cole found the back of the net again with 21 seconds remaining on a pass from
Sean Kretovics to put SVC ahead, 3-1, after 15 minutes.
At the start of the second quarter, SVC needed just 55 seconds to score twice as
Jay Lunz scored on a pass from
Zach Clark at 14:12 and Clark found the net seven seconds later from Kretovics. Lunz added another goal from
Matt Mackey at the 4:43 mark to put SVC ahead, 6-1. Two Thiel scores put the game to 6-3, but Kretovics found Clark with nine seconds to go in the half to send SVC into halftime leading, 7-3.
The third period was all Saint Vincent as the Bearcats out-scored the Tomcats, 5-0.
Nick Pensyl opened the scoring at 13:46 from
D'Angelo Cousar, 8-3.
Bryce Pasquariello then took a pass from Lunz at 10:04 to expand the lead. Lunz (from Pensyl),
Jeremy McGuire and Pasquariello (from Lunz) added the final three goals of the quarter as SVC held a 12-3 lead after 45 minutes.
McGuire opened up the fourth quarter with a goal at 12:04, before Thiel scored four-straight goals to make it a 13-7 margin. SVC finished with three goals in the final 2:16, all within a 1:16 span, to post the 16-7 win.
Alex Walsh scored from Clark at 2:16, before
Anthony Altieri converted on a pass from Mayer at 1:10.
Steven Cosgrove capped the scoring 10 seconds later on a pass from Kretovics.
For the game, SVC held a large, 62-27, lead on shots, including 33-6 in the first half. Saint Vincent won 14 of 27 face-offs and almost double the guests on ground balls, 51-26.
Lunz led SVC with eight shots, while Pensyl and Cole added six shots apiece. Lunz had a game-high five points (three goals) while Clark (two goals) and Kretovics (four assists) added four points. In total, 13 Bearcats recorded at least one point.
Adam Gunter earned the win in goal, playing 48:08 and making four saves while allowing just three goals.
Greg Gonzalez (7:20) and Logan Hoffman (4:32) each saw time in net also.
SVC closes out the regular season on Monday, April 29, hosting La Roche at 4 p.m.
