Bearcats pick up third-straight win, 19-9

LATROBE (April 29) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team won its third-straight game, defeating La Roche, 19-9, in the regular season finale at the SVC Turf.

The Bearcats close out the regular season with a 5-8 record and will enter the inaugural Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament with home-field advantage on Wednesday and Saturday, should they advance. La Roche drops to 2-11 this year.

Saint Vincent held a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes thanks to a pair of goals by Nick Pensyl and scores by Sean Kretovics and Zach Clark.

After the Redhawks tied the game, 4-4, 3:31 into the second quarter, SVC score seven-straight goals to close out the half to take an 11-4 lead into the locker room. Kretovics recorded three goals during the run, while Joey Lunz, Anthony Altieri and Jay Lunz scored and Pensyl capped the run with seven seconds left in the half.

SVC out-scored La Roche, 4-2, in the third quarter thanks to goals by Jay Lunz, Altieri, Clark and Pensyl.

After the Jay Lunz, Kretovics, Pensyl and Clark scored goals in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, La Roche tallied the final three scores of the game for the 19-9 final.

For the game, SVC held a 58-40 advantage on shots and picked up 46 ground balls to the Redhawks' 40. SVC also won 20 of 31 face-offs, led by Kretovics, who finished 12-of-16.

Pensyl had a game-high seven points (five goals) in the win, with Kretovics added five goals and Bryce Pasquariello contributing four assists. Altieri, Clark and Jay Lunz each had three points.

Adam Gunter earned the win, making three saves in 30 minutes. Logan Hoffman played the third quarter and made six saves, while Greg Gonzales recorded two saves in the fourth quarter.

SVC will host Bethany on Wednesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in the first game of the 2013 PAC Championship Tournament. The first meeting between the two teams saw SVC post a 29-3 win in March.
