LATROBE (April 6) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a 7-2 halftime deficit, falling 14-9 to Otterbein at Chuck Noll Field.
With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 2-6 this season, while the Cardinals improve to 6-4.
SVC struck first when
Jay Lunz scored a man-up goal from
Bryce Pasquariello just 1:15 into the game. The Cardinals tied the game, 1-1, at the 8:39-mark before
Nick Pensyl (from
Anthony Altieri) scored a second SVC man-up goal with 5:47 left in the first quarter, 2-1.
Otterbein, however, would score the final six goals of the half to take a commanding 7-2 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals struck first in the second half, just 1:14 into play, but Altieri recorded the next two goals to make it an 8-4 game. Otterbein answered with four-straight scores to thwart the comeback effort.
At the 10:02-mark of the fourth quarter,
Corbin Cole made it 12-5 with a goal, before the Cardinals scored two more goals, 14-5. SVC answered with the final four tallies of the game as Pensyl found the back of the net for a man-up goal from Altieri before
Sean Kretovics recorded a goal and Zack Clark registered the final two goals, one from
Steven Cosgrove, the other from Pensyl, to show the final as 14-9.
Altieri had a team-best four points (two goals, two assists), while Pensyl added three points (two goals).
For the game, Otterbein held a 42-37 edge on shots after an even (11-11) first quarter. The guests won 16 of 27 face-offs, with SVC's Kretovics finishing 5-of-8 on draws.
Adam Gunter took the loss in goal, making 11 saves in 54:20. Logan Hoffman finished the game and made one save in 5:40.
SVC is next in action on Wednesday, April 10, traveling to Alliance, Ohio for a 7 p.m. match-up against Mount Union.
