Cody Dean scored 3:22 into his collegiate debut, but the Saint Vincent men's soccer team was unable to hold the early lead, dropping a 2-1 non-conference decision at Mount Union.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 1-5 on the season while the Purple Raiders, a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference improve to 4-1 this year after also posting wins over Presidents' Athletic Conference members Geneva (2-1) and Bethany (1-0).
Dean notched the game's opening goal just over three minutes into the first game of his career after missing the first five games of the season with an injury. He scored after an assist by junior
Brody Ruffner.
30 minutes later at the 30:16-mark, the hosts tied the game, 1-1, which is how the score stood at halftime.
The Purple Raiders scored the eventual game-winning goal 18:34 into the second half.
For the game, the Bearcats were doubled up in shots, 12-6, behind an 8-2 deficit in the second half. Ruffner led the Bearcats with two shots, while four other players collected one shot.
Junior
Eric Houghton took the tough loss in goal, making three saves in 90 minutes.
The Bearcats return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 13, traveling to Pittsburgh for a 4:30 match against La Roche.
