BOX SCORE
LATROBE (Sept. 15) - Senior defender
Lindsey Daniels scored the golden goal on a header in the 98th minute to send the Saint Vincent women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win over Carlow on the SVC Turf.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-2 on the season and run their winning streak to three games. The Celtics, a member of the NAIA, drop to 3-2 on the year.
Daniels put the golden goal past Carlow keeper Ashlyn Fratto with 2:02 remaining in overtime off of a direct kick by sophomore
Emily Johns that followed a foul against the Celtics.
Saint Vincent had multiple chances to end the game in regulation, recording multiple two- or three-on-one opportunities, but each time either Fratto stepped up and made the save or a Carlow defender was able to slide in to block the shot.
SVC out-shot Carlow 23-7 (including 19 in regulation) and was the aggressor on offense for most of the day, recording nine offsides compared to just two for the Celtics. Sophomore Megan Smith led the way with six shots (five on goal) while senior
Monika Derboghossian added five shots (three on goal).
The Saint Vincent defense, led by senior goalkeeper
Cassie Overly, was strong in posting the third-straight shutout for the Bearcats. SVC and Overly have now gone 286-plus minutes without allowing a goal, dating back to the 82nd minute against Pitt-Bradford on Sept. 6. Against Carlow, Overly recorded four saves in 97:58.
Fratto made 10 saves in 97:58
The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, Sept. 19, traveling to Juniata for a 5 p.m. match. Last season, SVC posted a 2-1 win over the Eagles in Latrobe with goals by
Abbey Neish and Derboghossian.
