BOX SCOREThe Bearcat men's basketball team lost a hard-fought contest on the road at Marietta College by a score of 72-60.
The Pioneers held the lead throughout most of the first half, first opening a 5-0 advantage. A jumper by
Bobby Swartwout at the 12:18 mark cut the gap to just one, 13-12, but the hosts then went on an 8-1 run to make it 21-13.
Saint Vincent trailed by five, 35-30, with just under a minute left in the first half, but closed the half with a 5-point run, as
Jaylon Bell hit a three and
Sean Kett added a late score to tie the game for the first time, just as the buzzer sounded.
At the 16:23 mark of the second half, a score by Kett gave the Bearcats their first lead of the day (41-39), but the hosts would quickly regain the lead. Near the midway point of the half, a steal by
Austin Dedert led to a score by
Dan Sinwell that tied the game, 50-50. However, with the game tied at 52, the Pioneers went on an 8-point run and SVC never recovered.
JC Howard led the SVC offense with 13 points, while Bell added 7 and Kett had 6. The Bearcats' top rebounder was Kett with 5, but SVC was outrebounded 40-25 for the game. Kett also added 2 blocks and 3 steals.
Pat Jones, who did not play against Marietta, was named to the Marietta Shrine All-Tournament team after a career-high 20 points on Saturday.
The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, hosting La Roche College in the Carey Center in the 2014-15 home opener. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
