The Saint Vincent men got back on the winning track with a 68-52 victory on the road at Grove City, improving to 11-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Â
The Bearcats came out firing from behind the arc, as
Isaac Turner hit a three just 12 seconds into play, then came up with a steal, passed to
Ben Klimchock and Klimchock hit a trey to make it a quick 6-0 game.
Â
Turner's second three of the afternoon, at the 16:30 mark, made the score 11-4, and after a Grove City score, back-to-back threes from Klimchock and
Dillon Stith ran the lead to eleven (17-6).
Â
The Wolverines eventually hit their best stride, going on an 8-point run, while SVC went cold from the floor, allowing the hosts to cut the margin to just three, 26-23, with 8:45 to go in the first half.
Â
However, the Bearcats then regained their composure, with a Turner bucket starting a 10-0 run over the next 3 ½ minutes, capped by a
Sean Kett layup that made the score 36-23.
Â
Once again, Grove City fought back, outscoring Saint Vincent 8-0 for the next three minutes, before a
Sean Kett layup closed the first half scoring, with the Bearcats in front, 38-31.
Â
Klimchock came right out of the locker room and hit a three to start the second half, then following a GCC score, added his fourth trey of the afternoon to make the score 44-33. After the Wolverines scored to make it a 9-point game, the Bearcats embarked on a 10-point run, started by a Stith score and ended by a layup from
Tom Weremeychik at the 13:25 mark.
Â
However, the 19-point lead wouldn't last long, as the hosts then reeled off 9 straight points to make it a 54-44 game, before a Stith conventional three-point play stopped the bleeding with 9:53 showing on the timer.
Â
At the 8:12 mark, Grove City's JT Schwartz scored to make it a 9-point game, 57-48, but the Bearcats then regrouped, scoring 8 points, six of which came from Turner, running the lead to 65-48 with 3:41 to go and putting the game out of reach.
Â
Turner led the team with 16 points on the day, but his streak of 13 consecutive PAC games with 20 or more points came to a close. Stith added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Klimchock had 12 points. Kett joined Stith with a double-double, posting 10 points and 10 boards.Â
Pat Jones added six rebounds.
Â
After a physical contest earlier in the week that featured a combined 124 free throws, this game was quite the opposite, with only 20 combined shots from the line. SVC hit 11 of 16 while Grove City made one of just 4 attempts. The Bearcats were strong underneath, grabbing 42 rebounds compared to just 27 for the Wolverines.
