LATROBE (Mar. 12) - The guests built a 7-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of play and never looked back as Frostburg State downed Saint Vincent, 15-3, in men's lacrosse action on the SVC Turf.
The Bearcats fall to 0-5 on the season and have scored 12 goals in the last four games after an 11-goal showing in the season opener. The Bobcats, who were receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division III poll, improve to 5-1.
Facing a 7-0 deficit,
Matt Mackey got SVC on the board with a goal 4:01 into the second quarter. Two more goals by the visitors sent the game into halftime at 9-1.
Nick Pensyl opened the scoring in the third quarter, finding the back of the net at the 9:05-mark, but Frostburg scored four-straight goals to end the quarter, taking a 13-2 lead into the final 15 minutes. The Bobcats opened the scoring in that frame, but
Sean Kretovics scored the final Bearcat goal with 12:13 to play, and the guests added a final tally at the 10:08-mark to post the final of 15-3.
For the game, Frostburg held a 37-19 advantage on shots, including 11-3 in the first quarter. The Bobcats also controlled the ground balls, recording 42 to just 18 for Saint Vincent. In total, FSU won 17-of-22 face-offs in the game.
Kretovics led SVC with six shots, while Mackey added four shots. Pensyl posted two shots while
Bryce Pasquariello,
Tim Oxenreiter and
Steven Cosgrove each registered two shots. Kretovics and
Patrick Kenna paced SVC with three ground balls apiece.
Greg Gonzalez suffered the loss in his third start of the season, making six saves in 56-plus minutes.
Tim McCall made two saves and allowed zero goals in the final 3:17.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 15 with a 1 p.m. game at John Carroll (Ohio). The Blue Streaks are in their first season as a varsity sport.
