LATROBE (Mar. 18) - The Bearcats scored multiple goals in every quarter and broke their winless streak to begin the season with a 14-2 win over Franciscan on the SVC Turf.
The victory improves the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse to 1-6 on the season while Franciscan drops to 1-6.
Brendon Masten opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with his first career goal, but Franciscan answered 1:19 later to tie the game at 1-1.
Nick Pensyl gave the Bearcats the lead for good with 1:45 remaining in the quarter before assisting on
Bryce Pasquariello's first goal of the game 1:05 later as SVC opened up a 3-1 lead through the first 15 minutes.
The second period was all Bearcats as SVC used four unanswered goals to build the lead to 7-1 at the half and held Franciscan without a shot in the quarter.
Kyle Arthur found the back of the net at the 12:12-mark off a pass from Masten early on and then
Sean Kretovics scored a pair of goals 1:27 apart to push the lead to 6-1 with 3:34 to go in the half.
Steven Cosgrove capped the half with an unassisted score with 22 seconds remaining.
Tim Oxenreiter opened the scoring in the second half with a goal 2:07 in, taking a pass from
Matt Mackey and beating the goalie. Kretovics found Cosgrove for the latter's second goal of the game with 7:00 to show on the clock. Following a Franciscan goal, Pensyl and Oxenreiter scored to close the quarter with SVC ahead 11-2.
Mackey and Pasquariello scored in the first 4:15 of the fourth quarter to build the lead to 13-2 and Arthur's second goal capped the scoring at the 6:17-mark. The final score was assisted by
Jon Souders, marking his first collegiate point.
For the game, SVC held a decisive 52-13 advantage on shots, including blanking the Barons in the second quarter and holding a 28-2 lead in the first 30 minutes. SVC registered 49 ground balls to Franciscan's 22, led by nine ground balls by
Peter Hronis and Mackey's seven GBs.
Charlie Russo won 14-of-19 face-offs for SVC.
Pensyl posted a game-high six points (two goals, four assists), leaving him six points shy of 100 for his career. Kretovics (two goals) and Mackey (two assists) each posted three points.
Greg Gonzalez earned the win in goal, playing the game's first 30 minutes and facing just one shot on goal.
Logan Hoffmann made three saves in the third quarter and
Tim McCall added a save in the fourth quarter.
SVC will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 22 with a 1 p.m. home game against Ferrum (Va.).
