The Saint Vincent softball team defeated the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by a 2-1 score, then rallied for a 9-4 come-from-behind win over Marywood University in Clermont, FL.
The Bearcats entered the RHIT game with a 2-2 record on the year, looking to move above the .500 mark. With the score knotted at zero into the third, freshman
Laken Lyon doubted to open the home half of the third. After
Sarah Swettlen doubled home Lyon, the Bearcats were on the board.Â
Becky Deane's infield single drove home Swettlen and Saint Vincent established an early 2-0 lead.Â
Stellar pitching by
Ally Vrcek kept the Fightin' Engineers at bay through most of the game. Their lone run came in inning four on a triple and an infield ground out which cut the lead to 2-1.
Rose-Hulman threatened seriously in the 7th with runners at first and second with no outs. Vrcek rose to the occasion, getting the final three hitters in order, ending the game with a pop fly to second baseman Marissa McAndrews.Â
          Â
Vrcek struck out four Fightin' Engineers while getting several ground ball outs to secure the victory for the Bearcats.
Against Marywood, Saint Vincent broke open a tight game exploding for six runs in the top of the fourth to take control against the Marywood Pacers. The Bearcats began strongly with a pair of runs in the top of the first. After singles by Lyon and Swettlen,
Breanne Wallace reached second on a two base throwing error by the Marywood catcher. Lyon scored on the errant throw and Swettlen moved to third.Â
Samantha Emert's sacrifice fly had Swettlen racing home with the Bearcats' second run.
          Â
Marywood came back in the bottom of the first with a pair of singles and a double tightening things at 2-1. The Pacers added two more in the home portion of the second to lead 3-2. In the visitors' half of the fourth, the Bearcats tied the game, then opened a commanding lead as
Becky Deane doubled to right then moved to 3rd base on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by Marissa McAndrews.  A single by
Lindsey Daniels, drove home Deane. Â That was followed by a towering triple by
Suzie Cool, scoring Daniels.
A single by
Laken Lyon scored Cool from third, making the score 5-3. Swettlen and Wallace singled, loading the bases.Â
Samantha Emert, SVC's starting pitcher, then helped her own cause, singling in two runs. The Bearcats ended the scoring in the frame with an RBI ground out by
Shannon Baczek. In all Saint Vincent scored 6 runs on 7 hits in the guest half of the 4th, opening an 8-3 lead over the Pacers.Â

Later, pinch-hitter
Christina Folino blasted a solo homer over the left field fence to complete the scoring and a 9-4 win by Saint Vincent as Marywood tacked on one run in the 7th. Emert hurled a complete game giving up 9 hits to register the win, and the Bearcats bats pounded out 14 hits in support.
Saint Vincent is now 4-2 on the season and will wrap up the Spring Break trip with a pair of games beginning at 3PM on Wednesday, facing Muhlenberg and Immaculata.
